GARLIC
THE BENEFITS for cattle, sheep and horses
- Garlic has natural antibiotic, anti-fungal, and antiseptic benefits as well as being beneficial for allergies, internal and external parasites.
- Garlic is beneficial for respiratory disorders due to its expectorant qualities.
- Garlic helps to maintain a healthy and strong immune system.
- Garlic is rich in B vitamins and sulphur.
- Garlic supports the development of natural bacterial flora - whilst killing pathogens.
- Medicinal properties of garlic are due to a number of sulphur compounds formed from the breakdown of a component called allicin.
- Other breakdown compounds including ajoene, dithiin and diallyl Sulphide are all highly volatile and, once eaten, enter the bloodstream and are expelled through pores in the skin and through the lungs. The volatile nature affects not only microbes, but insects.
- Garlic affects insect growth and fertility - thus insects tend to avoid animals (or plants) coated with garlic substances.
- It has been proved that the annoyance, irritation and blood loss caused by flies can reduce weaning weights in calves by up to 7kg. Flies also spread disease and are closely linked to problems such as Mastitis and New Forest Eye.
Whilst mostly used for horses, evaluations have shown that there are benefits of including garlic in molasses-based supplements for sheep and cattle.
